All attachments must be "encoded" since email expects 7-bit "words". (Is that the correct terminology?)
I only ever use BASE 64 (MIME). This never gives problems for me so you might like to try it. Using the Mac standard hqx is asking for problems IMHO. No need to use compression since JPEGs are already compressed.
