Just my $0.02: Broadband is not just about speed, it's also about convenience. One you are always connected, and you have broadband speeds that are fast enough, paying more for more bandwidth isn't always worth it. For me, the jump from $20 to $30 would be 50% more money for vastly greater convenience and much more speed. Paying an extra 33%-66% extra (on the DSL rate) for more speed is only worth it if you'll be taking advantage of it.
I have Verizon DSL, and I recommend it. I haven't ever had any other broadband connection at home. They do SMTP authentication, which requires Baton Mail, but other than that I've had very few problems with them, and they were all relatively minor and/or resolved reasonably quickly. Some of my friends with cable modems (Comcast) have switched to DSL or would if they could. None of my friends with DSL seem inclined to switch to cable. If you have a notebook computer with Ethernet and a couple accommodating friends, I suggest you try out each service for 30 minutes or so, and see how much better the cable modem service is. Also, compare the reliability and customer-service reputations of the providers, and also factor in any other bells and whistles or limitations. Things like adding an extra computer to your network can sometimes cost more, or perhaps they won't let you use other SMTP servers than what they provide, or operating your own server may be banned. ** Doug McAdam ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) wrote on 7/11/04 12:34 PM -> >My ISP was down about 40 hrs recently and I'm just now back Online. >This has prompted me to consider DSL or Broadband of which I know >nothing.
