If it has a totally blank line between, then the bracket trick will not work. However, it shouldn't have a totally blank line. That means something is rewrapping the text a 2nd time and/or inserting line feed characters (which aren't allowed in the SMTP or POP protocols, at least not by themselves). Could be a broken mail server or list server. Of course, there isn't much you can do about that. In that case, I'd make a simple index page that can be linked with a shorter URL, and then let it link out to the more complex named pictures.
