Mairss Freimanis did this with some Chinese knockoffs of his Gecko drives. At least for a while, it was quite effective. He published "x ray" comparisons of his and their boards, color coded to show the places where the PCB traces were identical (which was about 90 %.) This got around on the Mach, CNCzone and other fora, and a lot of people, at least, said "Oh, I won't buy those cheater's products."
