I had been wondering about dragging the point back through the part -- causing extra/excessive ware on the tip). I wonder if you do, or could have, backed the tool out a little from contact, on the reverse. as for the low gear... I have used really low gears in the distant past and I am trying remember what for (maybe power reaming, surface cutting with a large fly cutters (6+" diameter using HSS)... cannot remember... really cool project though.
