but we ( linuxcnc ) do not offload simple realtime tasks to reliable 
non-jitter microcontrollers.
i still cannot see why not. we take tasks like reading buttons and 
sensors and activating valves
and updating analog values into an environment that cannot perform as 
well. i know this is anathema
but it just dont grok!
