We frequently want to use some standard IEC symbols in our manuals, and
we have some of them in some sort of graphic format (I'm not sure which
one). We also use things like agency marks, our product or company
logos, electrical symbols, etc, in manuals, product literature, and
internal documents.
What would it take to convert symbols to characters in a font set, so
that inserting them in a Word document would be as simple as changing the
font and hitting the right key?
Does anyone out there know how to turn a .bmp, .gif, .tif, etc into a
character in a font, and how to create a new font-set? Is this built in
to Word or Windows, or available as some sort of after-market
font-creation software package?
Any help that anyone can offer will be most appreciated. Thanks.

Jim,
I hope this will be of some help.
You can use the following procedure in Word 97.

1. Open a new blank document. (it will be based on the "Normal"
template)
2. Insert your graphic as you normally would.
3. Select the menu "Insert"
4. Select "AutoText"
5. Select "AutoText..."
This opens the AutoText dialog. Your graphic should be displayed In the
preview pane.
6. Replace the AutoText name with the AutoText entry you wish to use.
7. Click "OK"
This should save the graphic in the normal template and insert it into
your document whenever you type in the AutoText name.

To get this to everyone you can give everyone the same Normal template or
make a special template that everyone uses (shared on the network
perhaps) to do these types of documents.

For more details, read up on AutoText in Word help.
