Ian: It's a request that may be intellectually stimulating, but for a real-world answer, go get a directional coupler. Since you already have invested multiple thousands in equipment, there's no excuse to not buy a directional coupler. Check out eBay, go to your closest electronics surplus store, check out Pasternack & Mini Circuits & Werlatone, or try a rental company.
