I tend to go with the checklist in the form of a design guideline, accompanied by design reviews by a knowledgable expert at the concept review, pre-proto build design review, first proto build evaluation and and first production build evaluation. It's a lot cheaper and faster to find the problems in reviews than in test. Nancy Araway

The guidelines sometimes help anchor the new knowledge to existing, if not completely understood, "rules of thumb". I'd do both - if you can get them to read the text while up to their hinnies in alligators.
