True, but while they are reading they can reduce the likelihood of a problem
by sorting through reasonable guidelines. One of the concepts of learning
theory is that you must be able to attach the new ideas to something you
already know. The "I understand - this is a little like.......", thought.
The guidelines sometimes help anchor the new knowledge to existing, if not
completely understood, "rules of thumb". I'd do both - if you can get them
to read the text while up to their hinnies in alligators.
