My coworker wonders what it would do to pedestrians with pacemakers. As
for hurting the standard issue person? If you can't see it, it can't
hurt you, and it? How about a big tazer to zap the car? Or, ionize the
air with a laser and then transfer charge to the car though that. The
car will arc over to ground, making it's own EMC pulse and possibly
stopping it.

I agree with Dave's analysis below, considering the fact that the US
Automotive Specs call for Immunity testing in the 100-200 V/M range (one
small range in the 1-1.5GHz requires 600V/M) at 1 meter and failures
occur
daily I wouldn't doubt that a powerful device like this could stop a
vehicle.

Amazing how much power EMC can really have over the world today.

My question though is what if other vehicles are in the path of the EM
Field?  I wonder how much of a clear shot is required for accuracy?

Also, the effects on the vehicle firing the EM Field and all the people
who
may also be induced in it?  Any studies done to prove or disprove that
the
EM Field is harmful?  In my experience and study a field with as little
power as 100V/M can have serious affects on human beings.....

Just my two cents.

cool device. An EMP device like this can generate a 1-2 gW pulse, or so
I
have read. Given 50 kV across a dipole you will get 35 megawatts.
Directed
with a gain of 10 dBi this will give 2000 V/m at 50 meters. Is this
enough
to stop automobile electronics?

First post from a long-time suscriber.  Subject is automotive EMC and
the
intentional disruption of microprocessors in automobiles to disable
vehicles, presumably during chases.  In an article in the Guardian (UK
newspaper), Dr. Giri describes his newly invented device; the article is
at

also reported on National Public Radio (
http://www.npr.org/features/feature.php?wfId=3327049)  (watch for split
URLs).


Knowing the lengths that the automotive EMC community goes to to prevent
this exact effect, and having been involved in similar "pursuits" of my
own, I have my doubts, but am interested in the opinions of others.  Has
Dr. Giri found a back-door path into automotive microprocessors?
