A.8.5 Compliance criteria

No sample shall:

- have a calculated rate of flaming or glowing greater than:

* 40 mm/min for samples of a thickness of 3 mm; or

* 75 mm/min for samples of a thickness of less than 3 mm; or

- have flaming or glowing reach the 100 mm reference mark.

On the presumption that this is the same as UL94, doesn't the logic say less
than 40mm/min. or not reach the 100 mm mark?

<Does anybody have the actual UL 94 or the IEC burn specification?>

Unfortunately, I don't -- which is annoying, because I thought I did! I think
you are probably correct, but I honestly can't remember whether the
requirement is BOTH self-extinquishing & burn-rate, or just one.

However, I am wondering who you talked to at UL? They have a customer service
department that is supposed to be able to answer that sort of stuff now, or at
least know how to look up the answer.

Also, if this is done as part of an ongoing UL evaluation, you may want to
check with your UL project engineer to make sure it is ONLY UL 94 you are
subject to. UL requirements for materials (like tubing & plastics in general)
can vary by application, and you can easily find yourself in a different set
of requirements than you originally thought. I am not that familiar with
tubing, but I know there is a big leap when you go from a Recognized
insulating tape and Recognized magnet wire, to a Recognized insulation system,
but you can find yourself making that leap just because your transformer coils
got hotter than you anticipated.

Tried asking UL but no response.

I have a special type of tubing that I am have manufacture red to UL94HB -40
and I am having a small hang-up with the acceptance criteria.

Must the material be self extinguishing or is it just that the burn rate must
be less than 40mm/min. The material is <= 3mm.

I think the correct answer is OR condition - self extinguish before 100 mm OR
have a burn rate < 40mm.

The wrong interpretation, I think is the AND condition - self extinguish
before 100 mm AND a burn rate < 40 mm

Does anybody have the actual UL 94 or the IEC burn specification?

Thanks

Gary
