Brian, et al,
The IEC is a standards writing body. The standards are adopted by
countries and they designate the proper approval mechanism for that country
or region.
In North America some IEC standards are adopted as UL or CSA standards
(IEC/UL 60950 for ITE or IEC 61010 for test and measuring equipment, for
instance). In the North American market the approval of a Nationally
Recognized Test Laboratory (NRTL) is required for any equipment attached to
the power grid. NRTL's include UL and CSA, among others.
Within the EU IEC standards are adopted country by country as EN
standards (IEC/EN 60950 and IEC/EN 61010 as above or IEC/EN 60204 for
machinery). The certification process is carried out by the manufacturer
who issues a Manufacturers Declaration of Conformity for the product. This
includes evaluating the product to the proper Directives and Standards and
developing a technical file showing conformance to support the MDoC. The
MDoC is signed by the manufacturer (usually on officer or director) who
bears personal criminal responsibility for the accuracy of the
certification. The manufacturer may then place the CE marking on the
product showing compliance.
This CE marking is needed to get the product into the EU thru
customs.
There is no 'IEC symbol' which is available to apply to equipment.
I hope that this explanation helps.
As you know, this is the focus of my consulting business - helping
clients understand the needed requirements and getting the proper evaluation
and approvals for their markets.
Do we need an OrCNet presentation on this?
