Ø IEC 60065 still restricts the use of the IEC 60417-5008 (“O”) symbol
to all pole mains switches, clause 5.4.2 c states “Marking of the
off-position by the relevant symbol according to 60417-5008 or according to
IEC 60417-5010 is permitted only for an all poles MAIN SWICH which interrupts
all poles of the MAINS supply except the protective earth.”
We have same interpretation. If the circuit design employs a single pole
switch for the customer convenience to turn off the unit for not using it for
a long period of time. As O is not user friendly expression and not many
users understand the meaning of it, can we use “Off” instead of symbol to
comply with the standard.
Ø In the past we have used switches which simple mark the on position with a
dot or period “.”.
I have noticed it. What does “.” Come from? It seems as long as we
don’t mark O, it will be acceptable. Can we use Off marking? Why do only
audio and video products have such specific requirement but not others?
