John, EN 60065 standard is applicable. As explained by Donald, the | and O is restricted to all pole switch only. However, it seems to apply to isolating switch. For normal consumer products, it comes with mains plug so power on and off switch is not mandatory requirement according to the standard. On some circuit designs, they still employ a single pole power on and off switch for the convenient to the customer to switch off the unit if the unit is not used for a long period of time. It is debatable what is right marking on such switch. Any advice/comments on such scenario?

Is there any standard to set this rule? There is no such restriction in IEC 60417, but there may be in some product safety standards.
