It's a chromic acid passivation process. This means it uses hexavalent 
chromium. Let's hope there is insufficient residue of it to violate RoHS 
limits.

I wonder if the yellow colour is at least partially inherent; chromates 
are often yellow.

But I have some metal-clad power resistors that are anodized - gold 
colour!

Anodizing is an electrical process: a layer of oxide is built up by the 
action of electrolytic oxygen. Aluminium oxide is a particularly good 
insulator, too, and is very robust mechanically even in thin films.

Alodyne is a chemical process.
