Jim,
You have received a lot of good advice in the responses given. I've
dealt with most of the same issues in my product certification work.
One issue that has not been discussed is CSA certification of your
product itself. If you want to get CSA certification of your product you
must not assume that the UL recognition of the material, of itself, is
adequate. UL investigates Canadian differences for any cUL certification.
Canada adapts most American/UL requirements, but has some additional
requirements of their own. I remember that in one product certification
that I did the Canadian requirements required cooling the enclosure to a
temp about 20C lower than UL did before striking it with the required force.
The enclosure failed/shattered at the colder temp (required for arctic
regions) and the material had to be upgraded to a better (read more
expensive) material to get it to pass the test.
It is in your interest that as much of these differences as possible
be investigated before the material is chosen for a particular application.
Therefore, require the supplier to get all the certifications before
considering them for any application. This is part of their responsibility
in being a world class supplier.
