Further to Peter’s response and unless UL’s requirements have changed recently,
parts made from non UL Recognized plastic materials or UL Recognized plastic
materials used outside of their UL Recognition parameters and once approved for
use in the end system UL Listing, will need to be annually resubmitted to UL
for a re-evaluation. Hence, the benefit of using UL Recognized plastic
materials and using them within their Recognition parameters.

Best regards,

Ron

UL Recognized Plastics are ones that have been previously tested for
flammability, ignition or mechanical properties. These are done on small scale
samples and the engineer in charge of the investigation of the end product
determines suitability.

If a polymeric material is not Recognized, the standard either refers you to
another standard such as UL 746C in the US where you can apply tests on the
overall enclosure material in lieu of small scale samples.

So in response to your question, a polymeric material does not have to have
UL/CUL. It can be tested as part of the end product evaluation.

        Colleagues,

When dealing with our safety agency, we generally only indicate that
the plastics have a UL94 flammability rating.

All that I have reviewed also have a cUL. (Approval to CAN/CSA‑C22.2
No. 0.17)

In dealing with a new supplier that is getting the approvals on their
acrylic material, for use in a worldwide market, is it necessary to get the UL
and the cUL?

        Thank you.
