Hi Dave Welcome. This is a good place for help as is the IRC channel on freenode.net.
There are both realtime and user space elements to ladder. The realtime stuff does the actual logic while the user space stuff shows and edits it. Both demo_step_cl and demo_sim_cl should start a user space set of windows into classic ladder. I believe there is still a page on them in the wiki. http://wiki.linuxcnc.org/cgi-bin/emcinfo.pl?Sample_HAL_And_ClassicLadder It's a bit dated because there have been some changes to the way that ladder handles variable names but the essence of the interaction between EMC and ladder are in there.
