Since you are only talking about cutting wood and plastic a standard 
ball bearing would probably work.
Angular thrust bearings are hard to find in sizes smaller than 10mm Id.
The best way would be to support the leadscrew with 2 bearings, 1 on 
each end and not a floating leadscrew with 1 bearing and the motor on 
the other end. The preload would help any axial play.
I would be more concerned with a 30" (+) x 3/8" leadscrew whipping 
about. Bigger diameter would be better for both your X and Y axes.
