To the best of my knowledge, there has been no attempt to optimize the performance of the interpreter. If there is strong feeling that this might be a problem, I suspect that it could be improved significantly.
My general experience with products that have never been optimized is that a factor of two is generally easy. A factor of five or ten isn't unusual.
