You will probably NEVER get rid of this incorrect report, that is from the
data that the BIOS leaves in a low memory area for the OS to sense the
hardware configuration. Since the BIOS is incorrect, the data will be
wrong. My guess is that the program that gives this is just looking in that
memory area and not actually sensing anything from the port itself.

So, this report is meaningless, what matters is whether the port is
actually configured for EPP mode. What is read from the IO port
77A will tell the story. The high bit (bit 7) should be on for EPP mode.

But, apparently Mesa's EMC2 driver will set this anyway, just as my (ppmc)
driver does. Have you checked the cable to the motherboard's parport
header? It can be installed backwards, for instance, or have a bad 
connection.
