No, you shouldn't have to do any jogging before homing.  I just added a 
section to the gantrykins.9 manpage to try to clarify this.  Set the 
[AXIS_n]HOME_SEQUENCE to the same value for the two joints that drive 
the gantry, and emc2 will home those two joints together.  If they have 
the same accel and vel limits, they shouldn't rack.
