Yes, its a builtin EMC function that I have used before.  Someone here had 
posted a link to an oak tree engineered surface probe you can make from a 
slot opto and some of the telescoping brass tubing you can get at the 
model/hobby shops, so I made one for about a $10 bill, and used it to map 
the surface contours of the floor plate on Bertha as I was considering 
replacing that 3 oz of steel with an oz of alu.  I got that piece done, but 
have since gotten side tracked, still trying to figure out a foolproof way 
to register the front and back, and machine the spring groove for the 
cartridge follower.  Its a very shallow, high angle dovetail in the steel 
version & I've not stumbled over a suitable mill (yet).

See G38.2 in the emc manual.  Concise but adequate description, but ATM I 
still need to get my new drive box wired for a probe input.
