Helical couplings work great on encoders, tachometers, etc. that have 
little friction
and inertial load.  I've used them for years in that application.  But, 
only VERY
special and expensive units can handle the repeated torque reversals and 
shocks
of a CNC drive motor.  There are helical and slotted couplings made 
specifically
for motor drive applications, but most are made for "instrument" use, and
rated at very low torque.
