----------------------- I'd be checking everything over, adjustments and parts. Post a video of it making noise. I've used split pulley variable speed belt drives on drill presses and wood machines and they've been fairly quiet. The intermeshing sheave Reeves drive Shopsmith uses is very quiet. There was some company years ago that used those exact same split sheaves in a vari-speed retrofit for drill presses. At the low prices Shopsmith Mark Vs are going for on Craigslist I should buy one to cannibalize the drive from for my metal shop drill press, perhaps another for my drill/mill. (The prices are down due to the new Mark VII with its electronic variable speed motor. It's only about $200 less than a new VII to buy all the parts to upgrade an old V 500 to the VII spec.) Going back quite a bit further on the old 10-ER Shopsmith there was a smooth split sheave variable speed accessory. Didn't have the range of the Reeves type but is smooth and quiet. Got my fingers crossed that there's nothing wrong with the drive on my Acra mill's vari-speed! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Introducing Performance Central, a new site from SourceForge and AppDynamics.
