When the bushings in the motor pulley are shot, the moving flange 
wobbles and
wears away at the motor shaft.  Eventually, the motor shaft is 
destroyed, then you
have an expensive repair.  It sounds like this might be your problem.  
The machines
at work are very quiet, although they get louder over time.  They have some
guy who comes in and rebuilds the heads periodically.

I thought at one time about replacing the Vee belt and pulleys in my 1J head
with some sort of power-vee belt and adding an additional step for faster
speeds.  I never got around to it.
