Thanks for all the advice!
I think as long as I have a spare computer the safest is to simply set
it up and swap it in.
This particular machine has Mesa cards so I will install my spare 5i20
and cables for an easy switch.
Another machine that needs update has a Pico system so it simply needs a
compatible par port.
