Something I have used is an optocoupler to solve the isolation issue, using a positive supply available on the drive. I fed the input of the opto with a step input, varying the step rate controlled the speed of the drive. This was not very precise, but should be OK for a spindle. It won't get you a reversible spindle without some other solid state relays to control direction.

But, I'd be pretty sure the Fanuc drive is isolated.
