Ribbon cable is not exactly the best when it comes to noise and speed. Notice that no modern interface designed in the current century uses it.
I've had good luck with those way-cheap "Aviation" connectors. You can buy them in different diameters and number of pins. and they don't cost much. You have to solder each pin and use shrink wrap for strain relief. So they are slow to make. As for cable, I have a collection of multi-conductor shielded cable. For differential signals, cat-5 cable with rj-45 works well.
