I don't run ribbon cable any longer the 12inches, and keep it against metal surfaces to minimize noise induction into the cable. There are ribbon cables that have the pairs twisted for a length, but you are limited to connectors every foot.
I use shielded twisted paired cable for anything longer. More work to terminate, but much more reliable! I use a lot of Belden 9451, and 8723. --J.
