ebay has "buck" convertors good for a couple amps that take an input up 
to 35 volts and will give an adjustable output, even showing you the 
imput or output on a 3 digit display for something in the 5 dollar 
range. I've used them to make 5 volts from a 24 volt line, but I've also 
had one fail straight thru, cooking the bob on the output,  Failure may 
have been related to a 5 volt relay without a flywheel diode. I was 
banging a 5 hp vacuum for chip removal from the flood coolant circuit in 
axis. About a 1.5" by 2.25" by .5" board. You could stick that most 
anyplace its needed.
