I meant _just_ do that. No random hal files, no random zip files. Just a
normal LinuxCNC install with those two lines in the "display" section.

Which zip?  I didn't refer to any .zip. If there is a .zip then it is
_nothing_ to do with the LinuxCNC distribution.

Sorry, but I am completely unable to advise you what might be wrong with
random zip files that you download from the internet.
