Original encoder works, that is why I would gladly use it and not
attach any new elements there, because putting linear scale would be
somewhat difficult.

No, original controller has simple display that shows some numbers,
not a proper pc screen. Adding PC (and additional I/O boards) with
LinuxCNC will exceed their budget.

Something like this is what I also did find. I had several questions
that I could not answer and thus decided to avoid these:
1) can I alter the scale factor (encoder pulses per milimeter)?
2) is that linear module providing quadrature signal that I can
intervene and wire original encoder instead of that linear module?
because attaching such linear module would not be trivial there.
doable, but not trivial thus cost for time (and some custom parts).

Does anyone happen to know such a module
(https://www.machine-dro.co.uk/products/mini-single-axis-linear-readout-display-console-for-magnetic-or-optical-quadrature-encoders)
can actually have non-zero value when operator wants to "zero" it?
Because I believe that the rear stop cannot be brought to exact zero
position, there _always_ remains some distance because otherwise it
would hit that bottom support with the V groove where part is bent.
Plan B is to tell them that they will have to remember/write down that
offset and add it to DRO value to get actual position but that is not
really nice
