Maybe it really is easier to build something yourself with arduino or nucleo board. HW wise it shouldn't be too complicated, will just need a buffer or line receiver. For display, you could build a nice big RGB 7- segment LED display out of a string of NeoPixel (WS28xx). Minimal wiring.
