I think it's also correct, and perhaps more common (?) to use: "I
think this is the major issue FOR a lot of people".

What about this?

"Once Mrs.Linsa said she knew her English was really/too poor and
wanted to improve it but feared to speak in front of/before someone."

By the way:

- level best: the greatest possible degree; he tried his utmost
- shyness: a feeling of fear of embarrassment
