As for the desktop icons, maybe you just need to set icon theme.
Try setting one on the "applications theme" settings screen.
What I mean is that for instance the "Pictures" should have a folder icon, not 
the big question mark which is the "no image" image.
See my screenshot above.

I actually roll my own rpms, so I do install from source and use package 
manager all in one.

I kinda got a live cd thing rolled too, feel free to take a look, 
although it would lead you away from the "official" openSUSE and put you on the 
"distrohopper" path
