The e applet is from connman, rather than networkmanager.  Do you have connman 
installed and is it running?  With connman running and the relevant connection 
manager module loaded I get an icon to manage connections from. There is also 
an e-conmman module.

This is how I would go about it.  Set the default theme as you want it.  
Create a back up of .e.  Then change your theme to whatever you prefer and 
hold your breath.  Some themes are compatible with the default because they 
have active maintainers, others aren't.  So YMMV depending on the theme.
