It's not a workaround, silly. OQV's Reminders is  the "other component of
Office 2001" that's open, isn't it? just turn it off, like you're asked to.

That's a good catch. As I recall, the question of typing last names in the
Address Book never came up on the beta list. None of us seemed to have a
serious problem finding contacts in the Address Book as you do, For myself I
often just type those first few letters in the mini-"Name Contains" box in
the upper right corner of the Address Book. You will get a few extras of
names where that combination of letters is mid-name, but the surname that
actually BEGINS with those letters is first. So you just have to press tab
once and that contact is highlighted, then press return and it opens up.
