I do know that the post office prefers all caps - but I think there is a
subtlety to that. I used Stamps.com (via Virtual PC) for printing on-line
postage. When they print an address the address is real-time checked
against a master database of valid addresses. It is then printed in
standard upper/lower case on the front of the envelope with a full ZIP plus
4 bar code. The bar code is then used for the rest if the automatic sorting
to get the letter to its destination.
So I conclude that all caps is for OCR of the address with there is no bar
code.
I agree that all caps is not very personal or professional.
