What, exactly, has been your problem? And are you trying "Transfer to
Archive (Entourage)" or Carlsen's eMessage Archiver 2.5b3? I have succeeded
in having both work.

However, considering your alternative approach:

Well, I think messages are kept in the file "Messages," but I have no idea
what would happen if you tried to copy everything in MUD <except>
"Messages." Any of the MS folks want to hazard an educated guess? One thing
seems obvious: You'd lose links between calendar and messages.

They would survive. I don't know about dragging them back; that will create
new copies of the folders, and you would then have to consolidate messages
or delete duplicate folders, or something like that. Another consideration
is if you have nested folders; dragging a folder will not copy sub-folders.
Each folder must be individually dragged. We could write a script to back up
multiple folders, but it does not yet exist. Anyhow, when you drag them back
they all get created as top-level folders, so you'd potentially have lots of
reorganizing to do every time you backed things up.

This approach simply would not be practical with my 85 folders.

Just try dragging a single folder out and then back, see what happens. I
know for sure that if they are on the desktop, they will be unaffected by
anything you do to the MUD folder. Another problem is you will lose a lot of
information about messages this way, such as the history information and the
setting of various status flags (read/unread, sent/unsent, flagged, links,
etc).

Of course, Crevier's archive does not preserve everything either; neither
does Carlsen's, although it does the best job (except for attachments).

You are modifying the mail database on one machine and the calendar on the
other. What you really need is a way to <synchronize> the Entourage database
on two separate machines, and that just does not exist--yet. Maybe it will
some day if enough people ask for it. Can't even use a Palm, because
Entourage does not synch mail messages with Palm.

Maybe you need to reconsider how you are using Entourage. What about,
instead of downloading mail, leaving it on the server and using IMAP? Any
way that could work for you?
