Actually, yes, quite a bit.
I don't suppose that you'd accept that it's a feature? Oh, okay, it's
probably not.
Firstly: the monitor geometry is a separate entity from the monitor
resolution. Each "resolution" keeps track of what its geometry is supposed
to be.
Secondly: If you've somehow enabled Auto Recalibrate (which I don't think
you're supposed to even be able to get to on an iMac), every time you
startup, reboot, or change resolutions, it'll potentially "re-optimize" the
current geometry for the selected resolution.
Thirdly: many pieces of game software will automatically reset the monitor
resolution to 640x480 upon launch and restore the previous resolution upon
exit. If Auto Recalibrate is enabled, your geometry might be
"re-optimized".
The above having been said, you should probably ignore most of it. I don't
think it's what's happening. But it's a vague possibility. Among other
things, you're not supposed to even see most of the features that I'm
describing on an iMac (although I believe that installing the right
components would allow you access).
Still, if it describes your situation, then perhaps that's all it is. But
given the "random" nature of the geometry and resolution changes that you
previously described, I really think that you're likely heading to a
hardware failure. Especially if the geometry changes are completely
inappropriate for your resolution and screen sizes.
So, if you're still under AppleCare, I'd suggest that you should call Apple
Support and ask for their advice.
