There is (or at least used to be) a product called YoYo from Big Island Software that did this. Unfortunately, it used its own phone book and could not link to another. Nevertheless, a very handy product.
I have a YoYo tied to my old 7200. It works just fine and does what you say. I like it because when it passes on the CallerID data to the Mac, it passes both the name and number. And, using PlainTalk, it will have the Mac announce the callers’ name. You don’t even have to look up to know who is calling.
Unfortunately it uses the Serial Port and Big Island Software stopped supporting the YoYo awhile back. I don’t believe it will work under System 9 and have kept my 7200 at System 8 for this reason. And the URL I have for Big Island is getting kicked back as IE can’t find the server.
Actually, it does NOT use the serial port. It uses the ADB port with a pass-through connection. In those days, people used the serial ports for modem and printer. That didn’t leave a free serial port. It is also Apple Scriptable, so it can pass the information on to an Apple Event aware program like Now Contact. I used to use it the other way around. I had Now Contact pass a dial command to the Yoyo so I could have my computer dial the phone number without having to disconnect my modem from the internet. The caller I.D. feature was icing on the cake for me.
