I too, initially purchased the "special edition" to avoid purchasing the
full Office upgrade. I promptly returned it after realizing that the Palm
synchronization is hobbled in that version, too. (It says it in small print
on the box). I bit the bullet and bought the upgrade to Office 2001.

A week later I found out that Microsoft was offering a "Technology
Guarantee:" folks who purchased Office 2001 (including upgrades) within a
certain date range would be eligible for a free upgrade to Office v.X. I
had purchased it a week or two before the eligible dates. The happy
ending, at least to this, is that after a quick phone call to the
"Technology Guarantee" 800 number, they agreed to give me the free upgrade
anyhow. I was pleasantly surprised.
