What it loses is not hard data. You don't ;lose contacts, events, or
anything else like that, nor names or fields of anything. As the description
below indicates, it loses links between items, preference settings for
columns or folders where rules move messages to, etc. , and LOCAL cached
copies of IMAP and Hotmail (and News) messages still on the server. (If you
deleted them from the server without making local permanent copies in a
local server, then you haven't got the message to lose in the first place.)
Only uncopied news messages not still on the server will be lost, if that
matters much. If it does, that would be the one thing to do first: drag
important news messages (if there is such a thing you should flag or copy
them as you go along) to save them in local folders before doing the
rebuild.

Otherwise, it's a nuisance to have to reset Rules, etc. but well worth
saving all your other data as the price. Certainly don't do an Advanced
Rebuild just 'for the hell of it". Only do it if you need to. And then
you'll be very very grateful for it.

A Typical Rebuild doesn't lose anything.
