The Finder actually violates the UI guidelines, shift click should have
selected a range of files based on the current sort, with option click
providing the non-contiguous selection. Apple's mistake in this case.

Hmmm, I seem to select a range of files fairly often so I find the feature
helpful. As for similar items, I usually put similar files into the same
folder, but I guess that may depend on the meaning of similar for that task
at hand (as opposed to the meaning of is for the task in hand...;-). I guess
the utility of the function may also depend on how well the files are named
when it comes right down to it.

A matter of perspective, but as this functionality is very useful to some
even though apparently useless to others, as it has no detrimental impact on
those who don't use it, it seems better to have it than not.
