Easy way to test this empirically - as I did, grab a theme switcher (I prefer Duality), and grab ShadowKiller from Unsanity.com. Pick a theme which does not implement any sort of transparency, and enable the killing of drop-shadows with ShadowKiller - voila, you should experience roughly a 200% improvement in performance. A lot of what Office v.X *might* be blamed for has nothing to do with the exceptional work by those guys from the MacBU.
