Let's face it. The whole Calendar thing was not really quite ready for
release in Entourage 2001. Too many things not quite working right. If you
don't use the Calendar much you'll be running into some of that for the
first time now. Not having the option to turn off the "Tentatively Accepts"
default for invitations is not good - they fixed that in X. That little
window (as I forewarned you, I though you might mean that but I couldn't
remember if that's what it was called - you remind me it's a subheading)
was poorly thought through. Much of what it displays is redundant since it's
already in the Calendar view. Also people were very upset that only one
day's tasks showed up in the tasks subheading. So they got rid of that
"Today" pane in X and replaced it - in Week and Day Calendar Views only -
with a much better Tasks pane that displays all incomplete tasks. So now
people just look in the Calendar for the day's Calendar Events - it's very
easy to switch to Day View or week view to see just today's - no need for
the separate panel. And in the Calendar - as you say - the invitations do
show up. So there are no gaps in X.

Basically, there's just a lot of things that didn't work right for Calendar
in 2001 that work much better in X. The Calendar is undoubtedly the most
improved sector in X. One more reason for upgrading if you used the
calendar. I think that the calendar - and invitations too - is something
that will be a significant component of the attraction of Entourage and
Office X generally - mostly for businesses of course. People who need just
email and address book won't get Office for those: the improved Apple Mail
and Address Book in Jaguar will mean that many users will buy Office
principally for Word and Excel, if they need them. Apple Mail and Address
Book will be nowhere near as good as Entourage but they will be good enough
for many users. But the Entourage X Calendar is something else, and the way
invitations work seamlessly with both the email and and calendar functions
is unique on the Mac. In time, I expect that it will be the reason for a
very significant proportion of adoptions of Office v. X, as it is of Outlook
on Windows.

In a business, to be able to coordinate everything for one and many users
will be a terrific boon. For us ordinary single users who don't need all
that and don't want automatic tentative acceptance of invitations, it can
just be turned off. Perhaps a dialog popping up the first time would be a
good idea - why not? Some people object to all the dialogs, of course.
Invitations _are_ described in the Help, so the documentation is there.
Eventually we'll be accustomed to invitations, I should think. And to
declining them.
