I could have been a bit more helpful in my earlier post. I am running
Jaguar (updated) on my iMac (G3 500 768Mb ram), and my iBook (G3 500
640Mb ram). I experienced the disappearing text in IE on both
machines, with identical setups.

Since turning off text-smoothing, on both machines, I have not
experienced the problem.

I tried some of the "workarounds" mentioned so far, but they were more
of an aggravation to me than a help, so I finally just bit the bullet
and continued to use my machines with the disappearing text, until
someone came up with a workable solution.

I would rather have text-smoothing on, since it does make a real
difference for me, but I would also like to be able to see what I'm
working with.

I should also add that there were several sites that seemed to be more
prone to the problem. O'Reilly's site, in particular, was almost
always chopped up onscreen. BUT, and this is a big one, it was not
consistent. There were times when the disappearing text was very
spotty, and other times when all text appeared normally.

Wish I had a better answer than the one we have right now.
