Then it's probably be a post-Jaguar bug which I think is known. Entourage X post-SR-1 can have a database up to 4 GB so 250 MB is not so big, but probably big enough to affect performance a bit. make a new identity, import a small message folder if you wish (via MBOX -drag a SMALL folder from your main identity to desktop, switch identities, then drag the MBOX file into the new identity.) Is it equally slow? Then there's an unrelated bug. Is it fast? Then you need to look into archiving. The "poor man's" archive is to make MBOXes, optionally importing them into a special (slow) archive identity, or else just leave them as MBOX files for when needed, and delete the folders in your main, daily identity. I keep about 6 months worth of messages in my main identity. It sounds to me as if this is not your problem, but it's something you need to keep in mind.
BTW, you should not compact the database regularly. You should only do a Typical Rebuild if the size gets way out of hand (like 3 times what you really want) or you're really short of disk space or - the main purpose - if you're having database problems such as message lists jumping out of order. It's not great for your hard disk to be rewritten frequently, and not necessary. What you should keep doing is deleting unneeded messages (or archiving and deleting them). that frees up space within , makes is as fast as if you compacted, and the space is just going to be overwritten with new messages anyway.
